Supporting learning in Mathematics

The learners in this video sequence are studying for an NVQ Level 2 in Child Care. Their teacher, Linda, has been working with Carol, a colleague and Subject Learning Coach in Mathematics. Together they have been creating a scheme of work to help their learners develop an understanding of proportion.

Here, the learners take part in an activity that involves measuring and scaling up to get different quantities of a mixture.

    Thinking points

    • What questions would you ask to help the learning move on?
    • At one point one of the learners spots a pattern but misapplies it in the last calculation, her partner then uses a calculator to multiply by 10. What questions would you ask them to help them to re think their strategies to solve the problem?
