The virtual work setting is a workplace simulation that gives learners an opportunity to practise interpersonal and communication skills in a safe environment. Learners have an opportunity to experiment with new behaviours in a work role and receive feedback.

Use it with learners to:

  • explore job roles and organisational structure
  • practise communication and employability skills including customer care and enterprise
  • develop knowledge of professional practice
  • carry out assessments and devise care plans.

Use it to develop your own practice

  • Which virtual work settings would you explore using this approach?
  • What are the key learning outcomes you wish to achieve?
  • What value would extended role play and simulation activities add to the learning?
  • How would you work with your colleagues to design a virtual work environment?
  • Which strategies would you employ to encourage learners to explore the relationship between policy and workplace practice?
