Grading and selecting carrots

The farming co-operative in the Using IT to develop a farm enterprise multimedia presentation has recently invested in a machine that uses sensors to check carrots and reject those with blemishes. Details of the costs of the new machine are provided in chapter four of the multimedia presentation. The clip also demonstrates how the grader works using image processing software.
This activity explores the use of technology and challenges learners to consider how the machine is programmed to check the carrots. In particular it allows learners to explore how the grader 'learns' to reject carrots that are either blemished or the wrong size.
Learning objectives
Learners should be able to:
- develop their problem solving skills
- begin to understand the difference between how people and computers process information.
