World of Engineering

Learners often have a limited view of what Engineering can offer and stereotypical views of who engineers are and what they do. This is something that you can start challenging right from the start.
A useful way of doing this - and one that you could include in an induction programme - is the World of Engineering activity. Start this by showing the clips from the 'video wall' (see below) as a way of opening learners' minds to the variety of jobs in Engineering. Follow this by setting learners the project Can I do that job? in which they explore for themselves where their learning might take them.
Downloading Creating your own video wall will give them the information they need for the technical aspects of their project. The Planning learning tool provides them with a way of working with their ideas at the start. They could then move on to the Planning toolkit as a way of mapping out the different tasks that they will undertake and the personal, learning and thinking skills that will be involved.
The activities you see in the video clips are taking place in a professionally supervised and monitored learning environment.
