Using images as inspiration

When working with images in MFL sessions you can use images:

  • as a sequence or as an introduction to a topic to stimulate a discussion in learning sessions. This can be effective as a group activity, in a plenary session or as the starting point for a written exercise. It is especially useful at an advanced level
  • to stimulate a presentation by individual learners or groups of learners
  • to display a topic such as 'The Environment'
  • to demonstrate a sequence of events such as preparing a meal, also known as a storyboard; and
  • to assess vocabulary either as a writing task or orally in learning sessions, to avoid the use of English.

The tools you can use to create these activities include PowerPoint, TaskMagic, MALTED, and even a word processor, by inserting images.

You can find practical suggestions on using these techniques in the following activities (and others) on the Learner activities toolkit CD-ROM:

  • Cartoons and pictures
  • Fact or opinion?
  • Internews
  • Jigsaw
  • Making connections
  • Odd one out
  • Proverbially speaking.
