Developing a teaching toolkit: introduction
Video transcript
ANDY
Long day?
MARION
Yeah - and not over yet. Got an evening class at Hopton. Lovely group but I feel exhausted by the time I get there. As soon as I walk through the door it's non-stop. Everyone's doing something different and they all seem to want help at the same time. And people think that teaching in a workshop's easy.
ANDY
I know what you mean. Sometimes they get pretty fed up with waiting for you to come to them. One got rather annoyed with me the other day. But it got me thinking why do we always get them to work through these books so I got them to work in groups…it worked really well. I used this exercise I found on a web site. I could give them my notes…they might help.
MARION
I've been teaching for a long time, Andy! Do you really think I need advice from someone barely out of school himself?
ANDY
Sorreee.
MARION
No …. It's me … I'm tired… I'd just love to have time to try new things. I really enjoy it when I do…you know when they're all working on their own they don't want to stop what they're doing.
ANDY
There were a few grumbles, but I thought … stick with it, I mean you can't please everyone and most of them seemed to like it and I'll carry on finding new things. I mean yes it takes preparation and time but in the end it's worth it cause once you're in there there's less rushing about.
MARION
Anything that'll save my poor feet has got to be worth trying.
Sharing ideas is an important ingredient when introducing active learning methodologies. This area of the CD-ROM includes ideas which teachers have found useful. They can be used as a resource or to stimulate debate as part of a CPD activity.
