Using observation to gain evidence about personal and social skills

Steps in carrying out observations

1 Agree with the learner which skills you will be looking for and giving feedback about. The learner should be aware of the skills they are practising and demonstrating, and that you are observing them. They should understand that you will be giving them feedback. Convey a sense of partnership with the learner.

2 Observe the learner during the activity. If learners are aware of the purpose of the observation they are likely to react positively to your presence. Move around the room and focus on a few learners so that you can see how they develop during the activity and which skills they demonstrate.

3 Record what you actually see. Steer clear of imposing any personal opinions or judgements and check your own prejudices. It is particularly important to be aware of the cultural backgrounds of your learners.
